We’ve often spoken about finding purpose in everyday life.  Deciding what our goals are, our pursuit of happiness and fulfillment in a general sense.  But sometimes we are stuck in a position (a global pandemic, for example) in which we have to redefine what purpose is. Most of us were unprepared to have to try and find purpose in this new phase of life known as quarantine.

Each of us is experiencing a new normal.  Not one person’s experience is the same, and we need to be mindful that some of us are experiencing disconnect more than others.  Basic tasks for some of us have become more draining. Balancing the demands of our personal lives folded into our at home careers can be challenging.  We need to constantly remind ourselves that finding purpose in small ways can help alleviate our stress, as well as the overwhelming urge to eat all the oatmeal cookies we just baked.

Kidding aside, isolation can bring many different feelings to the surface.  So we thought it would be a great idea to share some tips on not only finding purpose while in quarantine, but also using yoga and meditation as a means to harnessing your inner calm.

SMALL STEPS CREATE BIG CHANGE

Find three small daily goals that you can make routine.  We aren’t talking about hitting those excessive workout goals, or cleaning every nook and cranny of your home.  Keep it simple!  Finding routine can provide a sense of purpose and stability in uncertain times.  This can be something as small as making your bed after you get up, setting out your workout clothes for the morning, or starting your morning with a glass of water instead of immediately going for the caffeine injection.  Worst case, your bed is in tip top shape for that long rest you look forward to in the evening!

AFFIRMATIONS! WE AFFIRM THIS TO BE TRUE!

Remind yourself of a few positive attributes…You can talk to yourself on a walk or in your car, and everyone around you will understand you’re talking to your imaginary friend Quarantine.  That’s pronounced the French way if you’re wondering. ;)  Okay but seriously, affirmations assert to us that we are worthy and we are whole, no matter what is going on around us.  It is important to speak to yourself with kindness, and understanding, when things may seem as though they aren’t going to plan.  Positive reinforcement of who we are is hugely beneficial for how we treat ourselves. Go ahead, try it! “You’re strong, you’re beautiful, you got this!”

We aren’t going to give you a specific pose for what your body needs right now!!  Shocking we know!  This is a personal journey, but we feel there is also opportunity here!  Opportunity to find new purpose in your practice or revisit some of your limitations.  Maybe back in the “normal” days, you thought you’d try something new “when you had the time”.  Well, now is that time.  Use this time with purpose and intention.  Start a yoga journal and write down how you feel about your practice.  What were your strengths in today’s practice, what do you want to revisit tomorrow? Add on to this by journaling at a personal level at the end of your yoga entry.  This can help with breakthroughs in your practice and also give you an opportunity to let out any emotions or feelings you may have bottled up throughout your day, or unknowingly in your practice.

Maybe you didn’t fulfill your headstand because your children were running around or your husband was hounding you about dinner.  Guess what though, you made an attempt and you wrote about it.  Journaling is therapeutic as you have a tangible way to relate how you are feeling, no judgment just your own words.  We want you to tie this in with your yoga practice so you can find purpose there too!

SHHH...THIS IS MY 3 MINUTES

Right now it may seem like meditating should be easy.  We are generally at home, and have limited social interaction.  However, because of this we are also perhaps being inundated with irregular stress that wasn’t there previously.  Start small and be purposeful.  Take a few minutes each morning to find some quiet.  Two to three minutes will do when you are first starting out.  We find heart breathing can be extremely beneficial to the path of meditation.  It is also done with intention and purpose!  With your eyes closed and your right hand over your heart, take in some deep breaths and focus all of your energy on your heart as you inhale and exhale.  In some cases you can try finding a positive feeling and breathing that in and out, as you focus on the area of your heart.   We heart you, so we want you to give it a try and reap the rewards.
